Healthcare Access for Myanmar Migrants - BBC News Myanmar highlights Social Security Scheme and M-FUND

BBC Burmese News recently covered the social security scheme (SSS) for Myanmar migrant workers in Thailand, highlighting the key requirements, eligibilities, and benefits. Reportedly over 450,000 migrants are in Tak Province alone – access to healthcare is crucial for migrants, both registered and unregistered. Registered migrants are encouraged to apply for SSS while M-FUND was mentioned as a viable option for those not covered by any government scheme.

M-FUND, a low-cost community health fund, enrolls members for monthly contributions starting at 130 Baht/month. M-FUND provides affordable health coverage for all migrants, including additional options for seniors (220 Baht/month), those with chronic conditions (330 Baht/month), and women who become pregnant after 6-month membership (330 Baht/month till delivery).

For already-pregnant women in Tak and Myawaddy, M-FUND offers an NGO-pregnancy option, ensuring they receive delivery care at M-FUND partner NGO clinics.

M-FUND currently operates with field staff in several locations across Thailand, including Tak, Kanchanaburi, Sakaeo, Chiang Rai, Ubon Ratchathani, Trat, and Mae Hong Son, as well as in Myawaddy (Shwe Kokko areas) in Myanmar and Poipet in Cambodia. Individuals from other provinces in Thailand can also enroll remotely.
